A City Kind of Farmhouse
The Farmhouse of the future reconciles urban spaces with healthy food and self-sufficient living. Designed by Precht, an Austria-based studio, the Farmhouse is an innovative way of bringing farms to cities by its retrospective design and environmentally-friendly function. Precht gives a salutary nod to more peaceful rural living while taking into consideration the complex aspects involved in commercial areas
Precht brings the countryside evocation of farmhouses to their namesake project by using wood as the primary building material for the building. The light that filters through the tall, glass panes leading to the balcony impart an aura of calm from the busy streets below. A natural sense of homeliness surrounds the space that is mostly built from wooden material. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels dominate the structure, ensuring that the building is not only functional and aesthetically-pleasing, but ecologically-beneficial by having a lighter environmental footprint. These panels then form the triangular, modular units, which combine further to create a fully modular building system. Each unit is built according to the homeowner’s needs, who are given models and layouts.
At the ingenious centre of the Farmhouse is its reinterpretation of the phrase ‘farm to the table’. They bring the farm to the home. Each unit is situated next door to planting areas that fill the V-shaped spaces between them. Excess heat, water treatment systems and food waste generated within the building is used to grow and tend to farms. The planting areas are accessible and inviting and, for those who yearn for a spot of green amongst the silver-and-grey of the city, invigorating. Residents of Farmhouse are surrounded by the very nature they can cultivate in their homes.
The building’s foundation lies in Fei and Christ Precht’s personal experiences as well as their professional expertise. The husband-and-wife duo founded the studio as ‘Penda’ in 2013, and upon moving to Austria, renamed the studio ‘Precht’. Farmhouse is a project of both passion and a sense of responsibility to the world around them. They credit empathy as the starting point of change towards sustainability instead of just new technology or products alone, and the Precht team views architecture as a means of encouraging this empathy in others while accommodating diverse metropolitan lifestyles.
The ecological Farmhouse is a reflection of the holistic approach to tackling climate change. The Casper & Casper team understand that addressing environmental issues may not always be at the forefront of daily living, and Precht provides the perfect solution by transforming the very spaces that we, as modern humans, occupy, without compromising our environment. From function to form, Precht considers all the necessary elements needed to create a harmonious balance between bustling cities and the calmer countryside.
