A Paragon of Scandinavian Sustainability: Samsøe Samsøe
Scandinavian sustainability has remained at the forefront of fashion this year, with Danish label Samsøe Samsøe debuting its SS20 collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW) for the first time. Originally a jewellery shop established by brothers Klaus and Preben Samsøe, the brand began to include apparel in 1993 and has since expanded to enjoy an international audience. Samsøe Samsøe is based locally in Copenhagen, providing simple, modern garments that emphasise function without compromising form.
For Samsøe Samsøe, the transition to warmer weather translates to looser cuts and the incorporation of sports- and work-wear into everyday outfits. Each garment in the collection is versatile, perfect on its own or layered to create looks for all occasions. From the workplace to external events, weekday to weekend, the collection fuses timeless elegance with wearable comfort. Garments are structured with sleek lines, yet softened with rounded features, while knitwear and draped fabric evokes a fluid aesthetic. Solid colours and occasional stripes dominate the collection, with the only print coming from the archives: a colourful bird print inspired by the iconic decorations of furniture designer Kay Bojesen.
This incorporation of the past is continued in the evocation of the country’s Danish Modern design movement, with the collection constituting a nostalgic homage to Denmark’s influential tradition. The understated colour palette is taken directly from this era, utilising midnight blue, desert sand, and seaweed green in soft, natural tones. No piece is too bold to add to an every-day wardrobe, presenting an accessible, minimalist collection that boasts a “quintessentially Scandinavian spirit.”
Samsøe Samsøe is well-suited for CFW, as their ethos of sustainability matches perfectly with the fashion week’s theme. The label’s emphasis on high-quality materials fosters durable fashion, but Samsøe Samsøe also ensures that materials and practices are as eco-friendly as possible. Recognising that environmental concerns affect everybody, the brand is committed to using sustainable rather than conventional fabrics. They prioritise recycled materials and hope to help shift the entire fashion industry towards more sustainable practices – a goal at the core of Copenhagen Fashion Week. The event continued the dialogue of sustainability that has been prominent in the fashion industry of recent years, and Samsøe Samsøe are exemplars of the brands pushing for change through practice.
The sophisticated simplicity of Samsøe Samsøe’s SS20 collection is a tribute to Denmark’s design heritage, combining function, tradition, and sustainability to create a timeless style. Described as a human-centric collection, the garments are wearable above all else, yet style is not sacrificed for any additional aim. We at Casper & Casper are inspired by Samsøe Samsøe’s commitment to social responsibility, and we’ll be watching them closely for more gorgeous, sustainable collections in the future.
