Dion Lee / NYFW 2019
Hailing from Australia, Sydney-based designer label Dion Lee featured their newest collection last Monday on the runway of New York Fashion Week. By now, the brand has become a season regular at the Big Four fashion weeks, and it’s no wonder that they’ve made our Casper & Casper NYFW highlights once again.
Headed by the eponymous designer, Dion Lee presents his new Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear collection as faithful to the sensual feminine form without relying on a pure array of female models. His artistic direction consists of highlighting the feminine, and in this collection, highlighting it with corsets. The inventive marriage of bralettes and blazers is an iconic interpretation of bare-bones formalism. A combination of mesh-whites, silk dresses and poet tops finish off the show. The romantic tone of the corset, however, is undermined in his more stand-out pieces, with bigger blazers and creative layering, and seems to cast it in a more professional setting, as if there can be any and every excuse to wear it to work. The male models are sensual in a different way: stripping back the layered-corsets to make room for sweeping and sleek blacks and blues.
The subversive tone in his creative style is further accentuated by diving in and out of formality through more grungy looks that include leather jackets and architectural bags. He also uses bold reds and blues and muted oranges and greens, remaining true to his experimental contemporary style, while infusing baroque and romanticism in a way that transports delicate lacing into a modern setting. Dion Lee also calls back to the year before with the iconic Havaianas-on-the-runway move.
WWD interviews Dion Lee on his work, where he states that it is about “things that felt kind of precious versus things that felt kind of quiet, every-day and easy”, playing around with archetypal architectures of fashion, sensibility and physicality. Dion Lee toes the line between experimental and formal, and makes that space his own.
