Melbourne Catwalk: VAMFF 2019 Recap

Casper & Casper had a wonderful time covering this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival. The fashion event on our home turf showcased great collections from classic magazine favourites that encapsulated our style. Current, sophisticated and cool, collections by Viktoria & Woods, Scanlan Theodore, Dion Lee, Bianca Spender, Elliat and Camilla and Marc blew us away with a mix of colour and elegant creativity.
Monday and Tuesday’s everyday attire and Thursday’s evening wear will have most rushing to VAMFF’s Shop the Runway to grab their own in-season pieces. Leather from Misha’s recent collection was a fun, edgy break from the usual cuts of dresses that defy gravity and form, all while maintaining its faithfulness to the feminine. Jason Grech’s work with gold, metallic dresses and sequins stunned the crowd with colour and glamour.
The menswear portion of the festival did not disappoint either. Brands like Chris Ran Lin, Strateas Carlucci and Casper & Casper favourite Client Liaison showcased both classic and experimental styles that did not lose any sense of cool under the heat of the spotlight. MJ Bale and Dom Bagnato garnered outspoken praise for their polished-chic spin on classic three-piece suits.
Even attendees in The Plaza caught our attention with stylish street fashion, distinctive of both Melburnian and international tastes and trends.
Diversity was also at the forefront of this year’s fashion festival. People of various backgrounds graced the runway, showcasing the core of Australian multiculturalism and adhering to calls for representation. Australia’s most in-demand models include mature-age model Lou Kenny and plus-size model Ashley Graham, who wowed the crowd with their flair, gaining rapturous applause as they closed their respective shows. Fashion has shed its all-Caucasian, all size-0 uniform models for the beauty of each individual model.
We can only look forward to more as the fashion industry progresses further, and colour us excited for next year’s festival!
