More than Coffee Lovin’: A Melbourne Valentine’s

Love is in the air all over the world, and we can feel it all the way in the land down under. Casper & Casper content creators took to the streets to catch locals in classic Melburnian style, and ask them their thoughts and plans on this special occasion for their significant others. This year, we also partnered with illustrator Sara Sidari for special Valentine’s day cards to give to the couples of Melbourne.

Josh & Mary

Josh & Mary

Our first couple was the casual pair Mary and Josh. When asked about what they think about Valentine’s day, they responded that they thought it was a bit cheesy, and that they approach the event with an attitude as cool as their vibe. Like most modern couples, they usually split the responsibility fairly evenly.

Brendan & Stefan

We also came across two friends Brendan and Stefan, who are both in long-distance relationships of their own. For Brendan, the day is important for him and his girlfriend, using it as a way to create fond memories together for the past three years, even though, at the moment, they’re physically apart. They enjoy when they’re together, and they split the gift-giving 50/50: “She’ll bring something, I’ll bring something.”

Similarly, Stefan and his girlfriend haven’t seen each other in a while. He prefers to stick to the flower-giving approach. “I know it’s pretty standard,” he laughs, “but it’s nice to have something [to give].” They also like spoiling each other.

Vincent & James

Vincent & James

On the other end of the spectrum, we met Vincent and James, who both came out of their own relationships. Vincent’s break-up was more recent, but it seems that he is optimistic about this. “It gives you time to think about yourself,” he responds. “It doesn’t have to be about a certain person.” James was with his partner for a long time, and when we met them, has been broken up with them for about 11 months.

Insightfully, he told us, “I’m loving myself at the moment… I think I’ve found [that] self-compassion, self-love is way more important, because you can’t put energy into other people if you can’t put that energy into yourself.”

Ava & Penelope

Ava & Penelope

For our younger lovers, we spoke with Ava and Penelope – two friends who are enjoying their youth and “riding solo”, as they so energetically put it. Neither are in a relationship, and are not planning to do anything ‘romantic’. They just want to hang out with their friends and treat it like any other day.

The Casper & Casper team are also feeling the love on Valentine’s day.

Our creative director Leyton and content writer Jyqa are both in long-distance relationships and aren’t able to meet with their girlfriends this year. They approach the romantic event similarly, indicating that there doesn’t need to be a special day for them to be extra attentive, communicative and loving to their partners.

Maria, our founder, acknowledges the value of and the change in Valentine’s day celebrations through the years. Maria says:

“It’s changed over the years. I think it’s a celebration of love at whatever capacity humans feel they need to celebrate. You don’t have to be in a relationship. It’s a celebration of the one day in the year where we can focus on love. For some, it may be their prospective partners; for others, the love of being alive, or the love for their family or children or their pets. It’s a celebration of the energy that love gives to humans to be better and more compassionate to themselves and others.”

Valentine’s Day can be special to others, and a normal day for some. Just like there are many different ways to celebrate the day, there are also many ways to celebrate all kinds of love. Enjoy the day with some wine, and in style.
