Rick Owens RTW Fall 2019
Rick Owens' ready-to-wear Fall 2019 collection reimagines the power shoulder of the 80s on the runway. Rick Owens fits the futuristic models with prosthetic makeup, contact lenses and sleek sunglasses to lend to the alien, otherworldly vibe of the overall collection. The power shoulder, however, is anything but imaginary, and stems from very real, inspiring social movements that enabled women to occupy male-dominated industries. For Casper & Casper founder, Maria, it had an especially empowering significance:
“It’s my favourite collection because it captures the past and present through a fashion perspective. The square padded shoulder was, without a doubt, a huge part of the movement in the 80s. It was a pivotal era in the professional sphere for women.
A strong shoulder was often attributed to traditional masculinity, and by wearing them, women were given power and confidence to be heard amongst their male peers in most spaces.
The voices of women, at the time, required being dressed in masculinity to offset their supposedly weaker and more emotional feminine side.
Today, almost 30 years later, the significant and positive impact of women affects many areas of society, paving massive inroads in STEM, architecture, design, politics, justice and peace.
Owens’ soft, arched version of the modern power shoulder is a reminder that women no longer need to walk in the shoes of masculinity, and instead be confident and powerful in our own identities, regardless of gender, background, shape or size. From the beginnings of the power shoulder to its present use, we have seen a progressive evolution towards equality, and there is no doubt that we can only keep moving forward.”
