Sustainable Fashion at the Forefront – Helsinki Fashion Week 2019
The fashion world anticipates incredible showcases of sustainability at the upcoming Helsinki Fashion Week, taking place 19-22 July in the Finnish capital. This year will see an expansion of last year’s Eco Village event, which was touted as the most sustainable fashion show in the world. Helsinki will surely uphold that record another year, set to showcase global multi-disciplinary approaches to eco-friendly fashion.
Since its inception in 2015, Helsinki Fashion Week has aimed to engage the fashion world in a dialogue of sustainability and environmentalism. Founder Evelyn Mora sees the climate crisis as “bigger than a fashion week [and] bigger than the fashion industry,”calling on all sectors to be proactive in addressing such worldwide challenges. The fashion week will demonstrate how life necessities such as clothing, energy, water, and waste can be addressed through a sustainable lens, giving a glimpse into what the world may look like in the future.
We at Casper & Casper are most excited to see what comes out of the new Bio-Playground initiative, which promotes cooperation between academic, commercial, and governmental organisations. Scientists will be exhibiting their bio-based solutions to fashion challenges, such as using biotechnology to create new leather-like materials out of fungal mycelium. This transition towards vegan materials is underscored by the fashion week’s guestlist – only designers who don’t use animal-based leather are invited.
Sustainability is crucial for any industry to keep at the forefront, and Helsinki Fashion Week continues to inspire the Casper & Casper team each year with their eco-conscious ethos and practice. We can’t wait to see the latest designs in sustainable fashion – stay tuned for our highlights article in the coming weeks!
