Unavoidable Fashion Trends of 2018
Feature by Nyanhial Yang
Although the year flashed by in a blink of an eye, there is no doubt that 2018 was full of fashion moments. Casper & Casper covered some of these in our fashion articles. Whether they were hits or misses is up to you! Having kissed 2018 goodbye, here are some the trends that were unmissable during this unforgettable year.
In 2018, everyone was more connected than ever, and information was more accessible and transparent – and fashion reflected that. Everyone seemed to be into wearing plastic bags, jackets, skirts and hats, tying together contemporary and industrial fashion in a new way. Whether it is a protest, a call for environmental awareness or simply a fashion statement is anyone’s guess, but it was a stand-out fashion trend of 2018 nevertheless.
Teddy Coat (I.AM.GIA.)
In the winter months of 2018, you could not go anywhere without seeing at least four girls in one of these coats. Popularised by I.AM.GIA. – a label that arguably dictated the fashion trends for the Instagram fashion bloggers and influencers – this coat was synonymous with the brand and its popularity propelled the brand to astronomical heights in 2018. We are eager to see what they come up with this year!
Platform Sneakers and Chunky Sneakers
All great trends always make a comeback and platform sneakers are no exception. Whether it was the Balenciaga Triple S or the Doc Martens Jadon 8, wearing one of these guaranteed that you stood out…height-wise.
Whether it was for your face or shimmery metallic golds, silvers and sheer clothing, everyone wanted to shine in 2018.
Taking inspiration from highlighters you find in your pencil case, this style was touted by everyone from Instagram baddies and hotties to amazing displays in the Louis Vuitton men’s runway shows. Think construction wear, but make it fashion.
Warning: leopards and snakes everywhere! 2018 could easily be summarised with the resurgence of the animal print. (What did I say about great trends always coming back?) From high-end labels like off-white to online labels like I.AM.GIA., nasty gal and realisationpar’s ‘Naomi Skirt’ being the skirt of the summer, I think it’s safe to say that we haven’t heard (or seen) the last of animal print.
Some of these trends may or may not last well into 2019, but most – if not all – definitely made it into your news feed in 2018 predict that platform sneakers, fluorescent clothing, metallic shimmers and animal prints will definitely withstand the pressure of being so last year. We at Casper & Casper are excited to see what this year has in store for the fashion industry!
