DANAD Design London Exhibition 2019

In the 1950s, inside a hidden-away basement of Marden Hill House in Hertfordshire, a collective group of artists came together to collaborate and create with each other. Of those artists, waves of iconic names in pop culture and pop art emerged to inspire others by the 1960s. Now, 60 years later, the treasure trove of underground artwork is finally available for the public to discover once again.

The DANAD Design Exhibition is hosted at the Paul Mayfair Gallery in London and features archival material from artists such as illustrator Tom Adams, known for iconic book covers for Agatha Christie; Robert Denny, a painter lauded as one of ‘the most original artists’ of his time with his abstract minimalist work; and Sir Peter Thomas Blake, a pioneer in pop art, designing artwork for the likes of Eric Clapton and for Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass

This time period, like any other, was rife with an arts and culture revolution. Pop art had portrayed details that were both for the general audience and for the like-minded creatives that dared to defy boundaries. Marden Hill House was a space for boldness and the courage to blaze a trail in art and design.

The cultural hub and retreat of regulars and guests from London’s Soho District such as Mick Jagger, Jimmy Hendrix and Sylvia Plath. Their work confronted their audience in various ways, causing them to look underneath the surface, and highlighted the complex relationship of humans with their environment and with other people. Colour popped out of pages and conventions, notions and concepts proliferated the British style of life through the work of these cultural icons.

In the past 60 years, the trend of challenging authority and vibrant social evolution through art has become more important than ever, and Casper & Casper can confidently credit the movements of the 50s and 60s for giving us new ways to express the continuing complex-cultivation of individuality. Now, a new generation of movers, shakers and creators will have a chance to view the exhibition from 25 April 2019 to 10 May 2019. Previously-unseen original letters, paintings, photographs and illustrations will be on display at DANAD Design.
