Experiencing IV Therapy

So, what is IV therapy?

IV therapy involves an intravenous infusion of vitamins straight into the veins. It originated as a ‘Myers’ cocktail’, containing magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin

C during its inception, and new scientific innovations and rigorous testing allowed the practice to permeate into society as a more mainstream – yet still lesser-known – method of taking vitamins that the body lacks. 

It is not a way to sustain daily life or act as a quick fix. It is more advisable to take a step back and consult a health professional.  

It begins with a consultation like any other doctors’ appointment. During this process various standard health checks are conducted to ascertain that there are no underlying health issues that need to be given primary attention. They then determine the needs of the individual body and healthy ways to maintain levels of vitamins and nutrients. The therapy recipient receives a customised ‘cocktail’, according to the results of the consultation.

During the process, the body absorbs 100% of the nutrients. Like vitamins, it also has a cumulative effect: an observation on the IV infusion of magnesium produced a marked albeit transient increase in concentration, providing a much-needed “window of opportunity for ailing cells to take up magnesium”. Additionally, it can last from a few weeks to half a year. This saves us on cost and the daily burden of swallowing supplements that may not always be 100% effective in replenishing necessary vitamins and minerals. 

Vitamins take some time to kick in. On the other hand, IV therapy advertises a small period of recovery – a small, inconsequential period of slight light-headedness as the body readjusts to the volume of nutrients introduced to it – before the body feels more reenergised, revitalised and renewed.  

Why not just vitamins?

Not all vitamins are created equal, nor can they all be equally absorbed. The manufacturing process introduces other trace elements that build up in the tablet, compromising vitamin concentration. This is then followed by the process of digestion, which leaves only a portion of the vitamin to be absorbed, and if taken in copious amounts, can cause harm to the stomach lining. The Scientific American recommends looking for 100% Daily Value (DV) in over-the-counter supplements, but these nutrients must first and foremost come from food. 

Additionally, the effect is cumulative, and they are not instantaneous.

Granted, taking vitamin supplements can work for some. It might be more manageable and more cost-efficient, or simply something that the health professional has recommended. However, taking vitamins can be a mundane chore on top of other daily obligations. Is this a sign of millennial burnout, or simply a demand of the times to gain immediate results for our efforts? 

The new choice

IV therapy is one among many innovations that is not simply a new health fad, but a scientifically-backed medical practice that is beneficial for individualised needs. Human lives are excitingly and rapidly evolving, with and through scientific and technological breakthroughs. The list of duties that we must attend to on a daily basis may seem overwhelming, and the health industry is moving at the same pace to catch us if we stumble over bumps in the road.
