‘Label and Love’ by Laurence & Chico
Laurence & Chico continually challenge the boundaries of fashion, experimenting with aesthetics and androgyny to subvert any and all expectations. The pair debuted their latest SS20 collection at New York Fashion Week last Thursday, the whimsical, New York-inspired ‘Label and Love.’ Drawing inspiration from Manhattan’s colourful intersection of chaos and creativity, bold displays of colour combine with provocative design as ‘Label and Love’ pays tribute to the turbulent beauty of New York City.
The design process is both individual and collaborative, with Li and Wang specialising in different yet integral steps. Each design sees its inception in Li’s personal illustrations, which redefine ideas of structure, colour, and flow by transforming thought into ‘metaphorical form.’ Wang then carefully crafts tangible clothing and accessories from Li’s vision, demonstrating the power of their partnership as two-dimensional designs become iconic runway looks. Laurence & Chico’s brand, established in 2015, thereby emphasises their distinct collaborative style, producing a womenswear collection with a ‘light-hearted innocence, embodying a refined wearable ease’.
As well as experimenting with the building blocks of design, Laurence & Chico’s collections defy normative gender presentation and stereotypes. Their progressive line of clothing reflects the shifting perceptions of the modern consumer, producing garments unrestricted by gendered expectations of self-expression. The consistent themes of androgyny and non-conformity maintain their core values of excellence unbound by expectation, with the brand fusing ‘street aesthetic and light luxe craftsmanship’ to create styles wearable by anyone.
The bold, daring fashion of Laurence & Chico evoke ‘a unique sense of humour,’ embodying a playfulness that simultaneously challenges traditional expectations of fashion and gender presentation. We at Casper & Casper find the creative process underpinning ‘Label and Love’ so inspiring, and we can’t wait to learn the narrative behind their next collection.
