Louis Vuitton SS20 Menswear Paris
Virgil Abloh’s art direction for the Spring/Summer 2020 Louis Vuitton collection sets a balance between tailored luxury and streetwear, showing that both can be achieved by the brand on the cobbled streets of the City of Lights. The audience, sitting at the cafes or standing by the streets, can experience the show as it should be experienced: gentle, casual, and easy, all with a glass of champagne.
Loose forms immediately impart this sense of ease, particularly in the utilitarian outerwear and jackets. In typical Abloh fashion, these are paired with pants that have multiple pockets, straps and other accoutrements that would typically belong in streetwear. Abloh did not shy away from season-appropriate designs, including floral prints, crafted tulle and straw hats to accentuate the vibe of the spring/summer 2020. A floral bag also stole the show as a literal interpretation of floral – flowers and all. The splashes of pink, blue and rainbow welcome a natural transition to warmer months, while the spring outerwear anticipate the erratic climate of our time. It would not be a Louis Vuitton runway show without the LV-monogrammed apparel that feels right at home in the streets of Paris.
Notably, the designer did not shy away from dressing his models in loose skirts and pants. This heralds a refreshing change from the strict, tailored fitting of the previous season, and conventional menswear tropes. Abloh is a welcome change to the brand, diversifying the definition of luxury with every collection.
